IRVINE COVE ESTATE
Location: Laguna Beach, California
Project Type: Residential
Size: 21,000 SF
Year: 2011
Service: Architecture & Interiors
On a one acre ocean bluff lot once owned by Joan Irvine at Abalone Point in Laguna Beach sits a 21,000 square foot Northern Italian Villa. Completed in 2011, this project was a nine year journey through design review, approvals, and construction. Much of the sloping site had to be excavated so this villa could prominently nest into the site and take advantage of the panoramic ocean views.
The client’s passion for Mid-Century Modern architecture and design is demonstrated through the use of modern furnishings and a guesthouse that is inspired by Phillip Johnson’s Mid-Century Modern Glass House, which elegantly sits in contrast to the large Italian Villa. Just outside the Glass Guesthouse is a 40 foot long sculptural metal wall used as a backdrop for an axial fountain.
Private loggias and courtyards with intricate ironwork, lush landscaping including 100 year old imported olive trees, tranquil fountains, a large pool facing the ocean, and two hot tubs surround the house and fill the property to make this a truly one of a kind project.
